Is punctuation counted as words?

No. “Words” counts Latin-script words plus individual CJK characters. Check “Characters” if you need a count that includes punctuation.
How are words counted?

Latin-script words are counted by spaces and punctuation. Each Chinese, Japanese or Korean character counts as one word, so mixed-language text is counted fairly.
Do characters include punctuation?

“Characters” includes all punctuation and spaces. “No spaces” excludes spaces, line breaks and tabs.
